Insight From Scraped Knees

My not so little boy biffed it good the other day.  He has a routine of running out of our apartment complex the back way, down the handicap ramp and meeting us out front.  I had Goob with me and was locking up when I heard Twodles start to scream.  As I hurried down to him, I initially saw nothing out of the ordinary, but in an instant blood started gushing out of his nose and I noticed his knees were scraped up too.

The moment he saw the blood dripping from his nose he went ballistic.  There was no calming him.  He was out of control.  I did my best to reassure him everything would be ok and that I would take care of him, but nothing I could do would make him better.

I knew I had to stop his nose from bleeding and clean his legs, and it wasn't going to end well.  In my attempt to care for him I found myself getting very frustrated, and losing patience.  He was down right refusing my help.  Twodles wasn't listening to a word I was saying, in fact he started getting so angry he was hurting himself and me.  My heart was aching for him.  He was hurt after all, but I couldn't keep from being irritated at him for being so defiant.  As I gathered the cleaning supplies I knew I would have to take drastic measures.  With one leg over his trunk and my other leg over is ankles I pinned him down long enough to clean and bandage his knees, all the while he was screaming, spitting, thrashing...just downright livid.  I kept thinking how obnoxious it was that I was being met with such hostility when all I was trying to do was help.

At the very moment he calmed and I could "see" my sweet little boy again, I felt terrible for letting myself get so irritated and upset with him.  Thankfully, I was able to take Twoldes in my arms to snuggle and give him the gentleness he needed.  I told him that I was so sad he was hurt, that I wanted him to feel better, and that I was only trying to fix his owies.

Later, when Mr Medic got home, I recounted the experience letting him know how disappointed I was in myself for not responding in a better way.  He kindly brought to my attention that often Heavenly Father must feel like I did.

He wants so bad to help His precious children, but we are too defiant and stubborn to accept what is good for us.  And I guess I can even imagine Heavenly Father putting both legs over His child to pin them down, just so He can do what He knows will be best for them.

I'm not sure that Twodles comprehends that what I had to do was only to help him, but I'd like to hope that I can look back on moments in life when I felt "pinned down" and see that it was my loving Father in Heaven only doing what He knew would be best for me.

Spiritual Giant

This picture represents one of my most rewarding mom moments of all time.  The picture itself has no significance other than the way my sweet Twodles looked when he said something that made me feel like all my efforts as a momma were worth it.  I don't ever want to forget!

I sat feeding Goob his usual breakfast fav, oatmeal while Twodles fed himself like a big boy.  Twodles is currently in the "why" or  "what does that mean" stage, which is actually really exciting to see his little brain connecting ideas and learning.

Today's Q&A session began with "what does aftermoon (afternoon) mean?"  I explained.

His next question was "when is church?"  I told him that it was on Sunday, in the afternoon.

He smiled.

Then I asked "do you like church?" He replied "yes!"

When I asked why he liked church I was expecting him to say something like "goldfish" which is the snack he has during sunday school, or some other 2-year-old appropriate response. Instead he blew me out of my seat.

"I like the Spirit...do you like the Spirit mommy?"

Immediately tears came streaming down my face (which you know sparked another question "are you sad mommy?" hahaha)  I couldn't believe that my little boy could say something so perfect, completely unscripted or memorized.

I took the time to tell him I had happy tears, and that I did in fact love the Spirit.

At some point something that Mr Medic and I have said or done has sunk into his tiny heart and he knows that at church we feel the Spirit.

I hope to always help him have opportunities at church and at home to feel the Spirit and remember that he likes it.

Keeping Track of the Little Things

Things I love.....
  • Twodles calling out "Goooooooob" in excitement when his brother wakes up from a nap, and seeing Goob smile from ear to ear and flap his arms up and down, the giddiness consuming his little body.
  • Once Goob is swaddled for the night and I walk him to his bedroom, he stares wide eyed down the hall till his daddy makes eye contact and smiles from ear to ear.
  • Twodles commenting on my sense of style.  So far I've heard in regards to my hair "mom, yer bue-ful!" "awkward....yer shoes are swkward"  "mom,  coo socks"  "yer pants are coo mom"
  • Twodles wanting his "boots" (shoes) on as soon as he wakes up, so he can be just like Woody.
  • Twodles hiding for the first time under his covers without making a peep or moving an inch on 11/25/12
  • When Twodles sees letters he says "Numers an J"  (numbers and J)
  • Goob cried out for me, looking at me with those sad puppydog eyes for the first time on 11/5/12
  • Twodles saying Daddy is his friend but Mommy isn't because she is a girl on 10/12/12
  • Whenever I go to get Goob up from naps Twodles runs to a corner and hides for Goob to find him.  They both love finding each other!
  • When I sing in the car Twodles always asks "mom you singin?"
  • Every morning as soon as the shower shuts off Twodles flings the bathroom door open and says "you done dad?"
  • The super cool bike we got Twodles is not a bike its a "more-cycle" (like Ted from 'The Lorax')
  • Twodles loves adults. He even knows which wife belongs to which husband
  • Seeing the similarities between Twodles and Goob, and also their differences
  • Good and Twodles absolutely love to play with daddy when he has the time
  • Twodles is interacting with Blue's Clue's and Sesame Street.  When they tell him to do something he does it
  • Goob gettings excited whenever the fridge is opened

Our Little Man

I can't believe that 9 whole months have passed since our sweet Goob joined our family.  If you ask Mr Medic his opinion on little babies he would respond "I hate the first year!"  You would think I might say something similar, but I've got momnesia!  I suffer on a daily basis and seem to quickly forget the not so fun moments.  Although this babe is far from sleeping through the night, I am somehow able to function from day to day.  And he sure makes up for rough nights with his sweet smile and contagious giggle during the day.

Isn't he handsome?

Here are some fun facts about Goob:

  • First tooth on January 26, 2013
  • Crawling with more coordination/consistency on February 8, 2013
  • Pulls himself up for the first time on February 22, 2013 (and subsequently falls out of the crib)
  • Starts waving to someone at church on February 24, 2013
  • Second tooth on March 7, 2013
  • Loves to chew on baby wipes (don't let you kids do that.  They can make them go blind...its a battle every time I change a diaper)
  • Is a little more snuggly than Twodles ever was
  • Is a blankie boy just like his big brother, and a binkie boy not at all like his big brother
  • Wants to eat normal food rather than pureed baby food
  • Likes to drink from a sippy cup
  • Starts scaling the couch on March 19, 2013
  • Is going through a bit of a separation anxiety phase right now
  • Has a rolling giggle when he is tickled
  • 18 lbs as of March 18, 2013
  • Doesn't handle teething well
  • Seems to play more independently than Twodles did
  • Has sensitive skin and the cutest little birth mark on his left cheek you can see above
  • HE LOOKS MORE LIKE ME THAN HIS DADDY!!!!!!
  • Nicknames include:  Goob, Goobie JJ, Goobie Loob, Goober, etc
We sure love you Goob!

Twodles likes girls

He's only two and is definitely already showing his interest in the ladies!

Any girl would love this tough looking dude.  The bandana and GI Joes in hand tip the scales!

His first time going to a movie theater was to see The Lorax.  He was glued to the ginormous screen for every minute of that brightly colored movie!  From that point on he talked about Audrey non-stop.  He constantly says, "where Audrey...she cute...I love her" or "mom, your pretty like Audrey!"  He even said he wants to be Audrey for Halloween.

First time to the theater
Then on the fourth of July we went to the city parade.  One of the floats had a bunch of girls dancing on the flatbed of a semi to loud music.  When Twodles woke up from his nap that afternoon, he told me  "pretty girls dancing on truck, music loud!"

Twodles checking out the ladies at the Fourth of July Parade, and Mr Medic looking VERY skeptical

As of late he's found a new crush...Rapunzel.  We borrowed Tangled and as we were watching it he said "I love this girl, she pretty, she got long hair on her"

Here's where Mr Medic will point out that even at a young age boys like girls with long hair, but its not the long hair I've got on my mind.  Its that he's even showing affection for the girls at all when he's so young.

Twodles is clearly attracted to girls.  I have never heard him say "I like the boy, he is cute"  Now one could argue that he has been trained and conditioned to respond affectionately to girls only.  He see's his daddy and me being affectionate (which I believe is very important for children to see) and he watches movies that depict men and women liking each other.  I have never talked to him about liking one or the other, nor have I allowed him to watch forms of media that promote same gender attractions.  So I guess if that is conditioning...I'm guilty.

I've expressed here on my blog once before already about how I believe that we are each born with specific gender identities, and I know that includes our attractions to those whom God intended, men for women, and women for men.  I know is that without much outside influence, Twodles enjoys him some cute girls, and it sure is cute and just a little alarming.  I assume I may just have to keep a close eye on him as time goes on.  I wouldn't want him to be that sneaky little boy that is caught chasing the girls at recess playing kissing tag!

So here are my questions:

Do you believe that people can be born with SSA, or is it a series of events that cause them to develop those tendencies, or a combination of both?

Do you believe that a parent can have a strong influence on their child's sexual preference?
  • For instance, if I were to play dress up with Twodles and occassionally put him in a dress, or give him barbie dolls to play with or whatever it may be, is it possible that I can alter his "original" sexual preference to that of another?

Sticky Surfaces = Happy Heart

Have you ever felt like your life would never be the same once you had kids?

Well...you're right!

I remember when Twodles was hitting all those little milestones in development, it was fun and exciting but there were also moments when I was a touch annoyed about the change it brought to our lives. Don't get me wrong, those times were very few and far between, but if you've had a child you can identify with the blockades all over the house to keep kiddies out of the untouchables, stained couches, stinky diapers permeating through the house right when someone stops in unexpectedly, sticky surfaces, clothes soaking in the bathroom sink to remove blowout stains, and so much more.  I sometimes felt like our orderly home that once had "nice" things was long gone.

I've come to realize that the little evidences of children living in our home are so sweet and precious.

Battle zone

Twodles clean-up job

Making messes while mommy is busy

Dino's need to be refrigerated, didn't you know!

Very first hand picked flower for mom!

I am learning to find joy in those things that at times have rubbed me the wrong way, or cause me to lose my patience.  Stained clothes soaking in the sink mean that my baby is getting much needed nutrients and his body is functioning properly, or that Twodles actually ate and enjoyed his lunch.  Sticky surfaces indicate that Twodles has been a good boy and was rewarded with a tasty sucker, or that we have been playing with play-dough or blowing bubbles.  The blockades show that I care about my boys safety and want to protect them from harm.

I just love the little things that catch my attention every once in a while to remind me just how lucky we are to have our boys in our lives!  I am so glad to be a mom and to see each of them change our lives for the better.  Its not the things that matter-the clean smooth surfaces, or pristine living quarters- its the people...and I LOVE MY PEOPLE!

What are some little things you have noticed that help you to appreciate life just a little more?

Snap Back to Reality

I was having one of those days...

Twodles, my ever-so-sweet 22 mo. old is developing his own opinions and is VERY willing to let you know if he doesn't want to do something.  Its all about "I do it" or "I not" these days.  Out of sheer desperation of going completely bonkers if I heard "I not" one more time, I taught him to say "no thanks" or in his words "no tanks."  This age is so extremely taxing on my patience and then to add being a pregnant mess on top of it sure makes for just a few runny nosed, mascara shmeared, snort in laughter at how ridiculous I am, sob sessions.

Church the last couple weeks has been somewhat of an embarrassment.  He is quite vocal when he doesn't want to do something, which isn't so great when its supposed to be a quiet place of reflection and worship.  Last Sunday, I was so hot I thought I was going to pass out.  Twodles didn't make things any cooler, insisting that only I hold him, or when he attempted to use my blimp-like body as his personal play place.  Then add a little thing I will forever more think of as pregnant torture...carpal tunnel syndrome!  I felt like Jennifer Garner on Alias being tortured by some KGB member.  I couldn't say or do anything given where I was, but I literally wanted to stand up and run out of the chapel screaming and crying.

I was bombarded by wacky thoughts like, "I can't stand my 'rotten' child right now, I just want him to disappear!"..."My husband has NO IDEA what I am going through!"..."I can't complain because then Mr. Medic will never consent to another child again!"..."I can't do this for 4 more weeks!" (the last one isn't so wacky, its totally legit)  Then just as the service ended and I thought I was spared an embarrassing scene of insanity, I began to bawl!  Darn it all, I couldn't hold it in any longer.

No sooner, I get "the look" from Mr. Medic.  Every woman knows what I'm talking about.  You don't even have to have been pregnant to know.  It comes when any type of unexplained emotion is manifest and he JUST DOESN'T GET IT!  The look of "what on earth is wrong with you, and where is my wife?"  Thankfully "the look" was followed by complete love and compassion.  But you know that didn't matter much, because I felt like a complete mess.  I tried to explain how I was feeling without succumbing to a total fit of hysteria.  But to be honest I was feeling guilty for my wacky thoughts.

After taking the remaining time at church to chill, I came home feeling a bit better.  I was blessed to have my eyes opened to some of the wonderfully cute things that Twodles does and it made me appreciate him, and being a mommy a little better, rather than sulking in pregnant hormonal resentment.

I CAN DO IT!  There is so much good that comes from the hard parts of being a mom.  Here are some of the great things that Twodles is doing that are my tender mercies and snap me back to reality...

Twodles got on a bike kick for a bit there.  I got the idea to teach him to tell Daddy that he wanted a bike.  I quickly changed my tactics and taught him to say "Daddy, I need a bike!"  Twodles recited his line when Daddy got home from work without a problem.  This is what we found, but our little guy is kinda a shrimp and still can't quite reach the ground.

He's learning all sorts of "boy" things like playing with his "guys" and making what I'm guessing to be shooting noises. (The bandana is compliments of Uncle Kendall.  Twodles loves wearing it.)

Getting in some practice at taking his clothes off all by himself.  I have NO clue how he got this way!

So excited to show me that he put his shoes on all by himself!

We worked on sorting beans.  He was pretty darn good at it and was excited to say "cheese" for the picture!

Spending time with Daddy just chillin' which doesn't happen too often.

Prime example of  my child's OBSESSION with vacuums!

The SUPER unusual cuddle time with momma!

Working on hand coordination.

He knows quite a few words.  He gets his smarts from his Daddy.

Again, learning to do "boy" things!

One day I noticed him rolling his arms, and then it clicked that he must have learned it in nursery at church...so cute!

Waking up from a nap happy!

This one is quite long so I don't blame you if you don't even watch it, but he sure does surprise me with the new words he picks up every time we read together.

I really do love being a momma to this cute little boy, and can't wait to add one more to the bunch.  Mr. Cooper will surly bring more trying times.  But even better, more of those sweet reassurances that all the hard stuff is totally worth it!

SO.....help me out here:

What are some of your tips for dealing with tantrums, keeping your cool when your about to lose it, and ideas to keep kids as reverent as possible during church?

Mommy Milestone

I've hit a MOMMY MILESTONE...maybe, sorta!

So I'm that semi controlling mom you always hear about that is kinda OCD about not wanting sticky toddler fingers touching absolutely every surface imaginable.  I tend to over-wipe Twodles' hands and face when I hear that sweet phrase "awe dun!" come from the highchair as he wiggles his pudgy little hands back and forth in the air.  Now that I think about it, I may tend to over-wipe when I'm diapering too.  Like when I think I'm satisfied with the cleanliness, I will usually do one more just for good measure.  And then I think of bath time...again, OVER WIPE.  Oh boy, I AM OCD...ish!

This image I caused you to conjure up of a child waddling aimlessly around the house whose body is red and wiped raw after each sticky goober removal may lead you to believe that his immune system HAS to be compromised. You think, "He probably spends the majority of life sick, or living like the bubble boy." But alas, I submit that he has only been sick twice that I can think of.

I would like to think his decent health is due to the fact that I subscribe to the 10 second rule, or that I have taken him outside and around other people since he was born (thankfully it was summertime then).  Maybe it's the fact that I didn't ask each person that requested a little snuggle time to thoroughly sanitize themselves (which is totally fine if you are a mom that does). Or, it could be that I recently allowed MYSELF to allow my child to EAT SNOW!!!  That's right, and it didn't even look too clean either!  That was kinda big for me.  He liked it so much that he wanted to keep eating the snow.  So I had to bribe him away from it with something a little less disgusting, and ironically probably a little less healthy too.

As you can see, I have some weird OCDish habits, but then other things I may be a little too lax about.  I may change, but probably not! The eating snow thing is what lead me to the possible mommy milestone.

It has always been easier for me to not allow Twodles to touch or do things that would be messy, avoiding a cleanup job like that of the little Mo robot on "Wall-E."  As of late I have been trying to allow myself to allow Twodles to do things that I wouldn't normally want him to do, like the sticky finger goober stuff!

So here they are:

Twodles pushed the chair up to the sink and started "wushin" the dish.  Normally I would have immediately pulled him off the chair.  I wouldn't want him to get all soapy wet, possibly lick the delectable looking suds, get water all over the counter and floor, have dirty feet tromping through the water that's on the floor, and cause me to have to mop the entire thing right then and there!  BUT this time I let him have some fun!  GO ME!

I let him play with a capped marker that I thought was all dried up.  When he scampered into the room I was de-junking with blue all over his hands and face, I almost got annoyed. But I CHOSE to smile, laugh, and grab the camera!  I think my usual concern for "yucky" things being on him has rubbed off a bit! (Note his look of concern.)

This last one may have been livin' a little TOO much on the edge, but I let him whisk the french toast concoction...I wanted to take over so bad!  I wanted to say, "Ok that's good, all done," especially when he dropped the whisk in the liquid e-coli petri dish and then proceeded to rescue it by plunging his ENTIRE HAND into the goo!  I stopped myself, even when he did it multiple times.  Keep in mind that the entire time he was whisking away like a seasoned chef, I kept repeating to him, "That's yucky, don't eat it...that will make you sick if you put it in your mouth, don't eat it!" Hahaha! I guess I couldn't hold back my usual behavior too much!

The last example somewhat relates to being a mommy, in that time is precious and mom's make food for their children to eat:

A couple nights ago I was making chicken pot pies which called for carrots.  Usually I would peel the carrots and then cut them up.  I thought to myself, "why should I need to peel the carrots?  It would save so much time if I just rinsed them off and cut them up."  To which I replied in my head "because that 'skin' is yucky...I mean it has touched or been touched by yucky things!"  I am a creature of habit, but this time I broke away from habit to save time. I also realized it probably doesn't make the carrot any more edible by peeling it first either. To make my decision sound even more convincing, I told myself that the "skin" is probably like that of an orange where all the good nutrients/vitamins are, and by peeling the carrots I am taking away from everything that is good and wholesome about them.  (I have no clue if that is true, but whatevs) I guess it worked because I DIDN'T peel the carrots.  I rinsed them and cut them up, that's it!  I even did the same thing again later in the week when I was making stir fry.  Score...I'm two for two!

For most of you, these scenarios may seem a bit silly or not even that big of a deal, but I consider them a mommy milestone!  Now here's to hoping I can keep up with this frame of mind and that it actually does allow Twodles some free agency, learning, and most of all FUN! (and I guess some sanity on my part as well)

Whether relating to mommy-ing or not, do you have any weird or silly obsessions that you just can't let go of?  OR...have you conquered any obsessions, and what was the outcome?
